The Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry Research Group has research projects within two main scientific disciplines; bioanalytical chemistry and medicinal chemistry. Research projects in bioanalytical chemistry include proteomics and metabolomics studies, as well as targeted quantification of small molecules from biological samples. Research projects in medicinal chemistry include synthesis and studies of bioactive peptides and peptidomimetics for lead-compound identification, structure activity-relationship studies and mode-of-action studies.

The research group currently consists of one professor, three associate professors, two technicians-, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. The research group teaches courses in analytical chemistry, medicinal chemistry and natural products chemistry at master and bachelor level.

The project

The aims of the project are to investigate the differences in the proteome, metabolome and lipidome between antimicrobial susceptible and resistant bacterial strains, both for clinical isolates and induced resistant strains. We will also investigate stress responses in the metabolome and the lipidome towards novel synthetic antimicrobial compounds. By investigating the alterations in the proteome, metabolome and lipidome of resistant strains compared to their sensitive counterparts, we will be able to identify important changes in primary as well as secondary metabolites (including lipids) produced by the bacteria upon resistance development.
