PhD student related to the EuroHPC project “MicroCard”

Deadline: 13.10.2020

Simula Research Laboratory AS

Simula Research Laboratory AS is a publicly owned research institute located at Fornebu outside of Oslo, Norway. It is a multi-cultural organization, employing about 150 individuals from 29 countries. Simula conducts ICT research in the fields of communication technology, scientific computing and software engineering. Simula's main objective is to generate new understanding and create vital knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value for society. This is achieved through high quality research, education of graduate students, industry collaboration, technology transfer and commercialization.

The High-Performance Computing Department at Simula has its overall objective to enable an effective use of future-embracing hardware for advanced computations. The research subjects encompass parallel programming methodologies & software development, high-performance heterogeneous computing, and huge-scale applications of scientific computing and machine learning. The HPC department operates a number of research projects funded by The Research Council of Norway and The European Commission. In particular, the HPC department is the host of the national e-infrastructure eX3 (https://www.ex3.simula.no) which has an extremely heterogeneous composition of processor architectures, interconnect technologies, and memory/storage solutions.

The Department of Computational Physiology (ComPhy) has its core research focus on biophysical models and simulations of the heart that span a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, from investigation of detailed subcellular phenomena to organ-level analysis driven by clinical data. The ComPhy department is the host of many research projects funded nationally and internationally. Several of these projects have used flagship supercomputers for simulating cardiac electrophysiology.

Call for PhD student related to the EuroHPC project “MicroCard”

Simula Research Laboratory is one of the main partners of the newly funded EuroHPC project “MicroCard”. One 3-year PhD position is to be recruited to carry out research activities of this project on the Simula side.

About the Position

Simula Research Laboratory invites outstanding applicants for one 3-year PhD position, who will carry out research activities within the MicroCard project, which has the overall objective to develop an exascale application platform for cardiac electrophysiology simulations that is usable for cell-by-cell simulations.

The starting date is January 1, 2021.

The PhD student is to enroll in the PhD program of University of Oslo, and obtain the PhD from University of Oslo upon completion.

Responsibilities

The PhD student is expected to adopt modern techniques of HPC and performance optimization, as well as the latest developments in HPC hardware and middleware, to enable efficient simulation of cardiac electrophysiology based on a cell-by-cell approach. The research activities will be under supervision and assistance of senior staff at the HPC and ComPhy departments. The PhD student is also expected to actively collaborate with researchers at the other partners of the project. Writing scientific publications and software code, as well as disseminating/reporting the project’s research findings, are included in the responsibilities of the PhD position.

Required profile

All applicants must hold a master's degree (or equivalent education) in a subject of computational science or computer science. The successful candidate must have solid knowledge of numerical methods for solving PDEs, parallel computing and programming. Expertise with computational electrophysiology is preferred. It is also expected that the successful candidate has good skills in scientific communication (both oral and written).
