About the position

A 100 % position is available at the University of Agder, Faculty of Engineering and Science as a PhD Research Fellow in in Marine ecology – Microplastics in the coastal Marine environment, affiliated to the Department of Natural Sciences, for a period of three years. The position is located, at the present, at Campus Kristiansand. The starting date is 1 January 2021 or to be negotiated with the Faculty.

The Department of Natural Sciences offers a 3 year bachelor program in Biology, a 2 year master program in marine ecology as well as a 3 year PhD program in Natural Sciences. The Department also offer a 3 years bachelor program in Biomedical Science and the Natural Sciences in the Teacher Education.

The marine group at the Department comprises about 20 people including professors, associate professors, postdocs and PhD fellows. The PhD fellow will also benefit from our Priority research center, Centre for Coastal Research (CCR).

Responsibilities

The PhD fellow will have research focus on microplastics in sediments and pacific oyster” (Crassostrea gigas) in coastal Skagerrak.

As microplastics are an emerging marine pollutant it is important to understand its distribution in the marine environment and its implications on marine habitants and marine biota. What is clear is that further research on a variety of marine organismsis is required to understand the environmental implications of microplastics in more detail and to establish effects in natural populations.

Required qualifications

  • Master´s degree in marine ecology. This year’s candidates/candidates who are in the closing stages of their master’s degree can also apply.
  • Written and spoken English proficiency. Applicants from some countries must document their English proficiency through one of the following tests with the stated results or better:
    • TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language with a minimum score of 550 on the Paper-based Test (PBT), or 80 on the Internet based Test (iBT)
    • ELTS – International English Testing System, with a result of at least 6.0. Please check this list to see if an English test is required. Please note that the English test requirement applies to applicants from most countries according to the list mentioned above. No other English tests will be approved, and certifications/statements cannot replace an English test.

  • The average grade for courses included in the bachelor´s degree (or equivalent) should be C (or equivalent) or higher
  • The average grade for courses included in the master´s degree (or equivalent) should be B (or equivalent) or higher
  • The master´s thesis (or equivalent) should have a grade B (or equivalent) or higher

A prerequisite for employment is that the candidate is to be admitted to UiA’s PhD programme at the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences, Natural Sciences, Specialisation in Coastal ecology

Desired qualifications

  • Experience with statistical programming (for instance with R)
  • Experience in fieldwork
  • Experience in laboratory activities
  • Use of IR analytical instruments

The position is remunerated according to the State Salary Scale, salary plan 17.515, code 1017 PhD Research Fellow, NOK 479 600 gross salary per year. A compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
