About the position
A full-time permanent position is available at the University of Agder, Faculty of Engineering and Science as a Researcher in Information and Communication Technology. The position is affiliated to the Department of ICT and located at Campus Grimstad.
The position is externally financed by a research grant from The Norwegian Research Council and is part of the project ‘’CareWell’’ (Cooperative Human Activity Recognition and Localization for Healthcare and Wellbeing). The project has temporary financing for three (3) years. The starting date is as soon as possible or to be negotiated with the Faculty.
The Department of ICT has three large and active research groups in ICT, including 12 professors, 15 associate professors, 10 assistant professors and 15 research fellows. The department pursues a variety of research interests, focusing especially on mobile radio communications, wireless sensing, embedded systems, artificial intelligence, data analytics, crisis management, eLearning, and eHealth. The department has successfully led many large-scale research projects funded by the Research Council of Norway; the EU research programmes FP7 and H2020, as well as national and international industries.
Research Topics
This open position is intended to carry out interdisciplinary research in the area of radio frequency (RF) sensing of human daily life activities using commodity Wi-Fi devices and radar sensors. The research is carried out in close cooperation with partners from the healthcare sector, industry, and academia. The focus will be on unfolding the potential of RF sensing on the recognition and localization of human activities in indoor environments.
Potential research topics include, but are not limited to:
Developing a mathematical framework for the characterization of non-stationary multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radio channels for activity recognition;
Time-frequency signal processing and analysis of non-stationary MIMO channels;
Measurement, modelling, and analysis of RF channels for human activity
recognition;
Wi-Fi sensing and radar sensing for human activity recognition;
Channel parameter estimation, localization, and tracking.
Responsibilities
The Researcher shall actively contribute to attracting external funding to the research project, both for her/his own position and other positions, from the Research Council of Norway, EU and other sources.
The Researcher is expected to have her/his research activity financed by the project of the Researcher and the projects of the associated research group.
The Researcher may participate in committee work and other administrative tasks within the University of Agder.
The Researcher has no teaching duties but is expected to supervise master students and PhD candidates when this is a natural part of the research activity of the research group.
The basis for the position ceases if no further project funding and law on state officials etc. on dismissal and preferential rights will be applied to permanent employees.
Required qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD degree and a master’s (or Dipl.-Ing.) degree in ICT, electrical engineering or a similar/related field and document expertise in areas relevant to the position. It is desirable that the applicants have defended their doctoral thesis within the last four years. To be considered for the position, applicants must have an approved PhD dissertation or submitted the PhD thesis by the application deadline.
A high level of oral and written proficiency in English is required.
Furthermore, the applicant must have profound knowledge in at least three of the following fields:
Probability theory, stochastic processes, analysis, and linear algebra;
Time-frequency signal processing and RF techniques;
Physical layer aspects of mobile radio communications;
Computer programming with MATLAB.
The applicants must have strong academic credentials. Participation in ongoing projects, as well as initiating independent research projects and collaboration on external research funding applications is expected.

Personal suitability, good teamwork skills, inventiveness, relevant practical experience, and a proactive approach will be emphasised in the evaluation. The Researcher will be expected to contribute to an active research community that promotes the personal and professional growth of the doctoral candidates. The position places great demands on the applicant’s capacity for independent goal-oriented work, ability to concentrate, and attention to detail.

The position is remunerated according to the State Salary Scale 90.400, code 1109 Researcher, NOK 552 800 – 583 900 gross salary per year. Higher salary grades may be considered for particularly well-qualified applicants. A compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
