The Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre (NBIC) has become partner in "Building the European Biodiversity Observation Network»; an EU project focusing on building a European infrastructure for data and biodiversity.
During the last decades, the amount of biodiversity data worldwide has exploded. The possibilities to store and create new data sets have never been as comprehensive as now. However, formats and data structures may vary a great deal, not only between countries but also between institutions. This creates challenges related to data quality and accessibility.
EU BON is the only EU project of its kind and the purpose is to build an infra-structure that improves the exchange and dataflow throughout Europe. At the same time the project is also a European link to the Global Initiative on Biodiversity Observation Data (GEO BON) and the future work under the newly established Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
"The reason why NBIC has been invited into this EU project, is our experiences and good results in establishing national infrastructures for data management and science-policy interface," states Ivar Myklebust, Director of NBIC.
