A long night of pumping and melting

Thursday 22nd March. Posted by Miriam Jackson

We are just at the beginning of a long night of pumping and melting. Coline and Mathieu, finished measuring the positions of the different seismometers with the total station. Gaute and PiM managed to get the data logger to work so we packed all the boreholes that go up to the base of the glacier and have started doing the pump tests.

We have also started melting out an ice tunnel today. The melting will be done by people working in two teams.

A photographer arrived today, too, who will write about the subglacial laboratory for Statkraft, who own the tunnel and operate the hydropower plant that the tunnel system was actually constructed for.
